The Universe By Ear: The Universe By Ear

Hailing from Basel, Switzerland, The Universe By Ear released their debut self-titled album in 2017 and followed it with their sophomore release, again a self-titled effort.

The trio consists of Pascal Grünenfelder (bass, effects, vocals), Stefan Strittmatter (guitars, effects, vocals) and Beni Bürgin (drums, percussion, vocals).

What you will hear are eleven tracks and forty-six minutes of irresistible rock music in the psychedelic, stoner, space and pop mediums. First off let me say the lead vocals are stellar and all three members are very talented in that regard, some awesome harmonizing throughout the disc. This is certainly a huge plus for me as the music really catches the ear. The guitar riffs are everywhere, heavy and light and everything in between creating various moods and textures. The moody and texturized psychedelic instrumental rock of “Sand…” being a prime example. The follow up track “…And Dust” is a gorgeous offering of quiet guitar chords and lush lead vocals. Lots of cool effects abound as well, take the excellent “Fall” as a case in point. It’s a dreamier and mellow affair with a trippy section that should satisfy all you space nuts out there.

The first track “Been Here Before” has a heavy garage rock sound followed by the slower “Where All Sheep Are Black” where the band’s stoner rock side reveals itself. In the catchy “Temperamental Apathy” you get wall of sound guitars and pop hooks galore and in “Follow The Echo” more psychedelic pop elements can be heard. The band shows there technical side with “Euphoria” where the guitar riffs twist and turn through some pretty complex rhythmic progressions. Another excellent track.

The Universe By Ear has made an impressive second album, now if you will excuse me I really need to hear their first. Highly recommended.

A Sireena Records release.
