Alwanzatar: Fangarmer Gjennom Tid og Rom
Kristoffer Momrak, aka Krizla, is a member of the Norwegian progressive folk rock band Tusmørke of which I have recently became familiar with. He also has a solo project called Alwanzatar, experimenting in the electronic and space rock side of the progressive spectrum. His latest album is titled Fangarmer Gjennom Tid og Rom which translated in English means Tentacles In Time And Space, a very suitable title given the style of music.
According to the liner notes, of the five tracks four are old and one is new. The first track “I virvlende dampskyer” is also the longest at just over fourteen minutes. Trippy synths and electronics create ominous and dreamy sounds as well as flute, which serves to add an organic touch to Krizla’s electronic template. Analog synths like Roland, KORG and Moog make their appearance known almost immediately and throughout the tune the playing is both adventurous and really quite melodic. Gurgling synth blasts and Mellotron choirs weave through the soundscape in “Enden av gangen” while “Trommeskogen” has a Scandinavian folksy vibe with its ethereal flutes and darker tones. Speaking of dark, the next track “Bergtrollets Komme” sounds pretty ominous, filled with unsettling electronics and warbling synths. One can certainly hear some Ozric Tentacles in many of these tracks.
Although it has taken a while to get to this review I am glad to have finally given this album a few spins. Krizla certainly presents his own unique take on electronic music and should be well worth a listen for those who participate in the genre.
An Apollon Records release.
