Nikolov-Ivanovic Undectet: Frame And Curiosity

The Nikolov-Ivanovic Undectet is an eclectic jazz assemble led by Vladimir Nikolov (piano, keyboards, guitar) and Srdan Ivanovic (drums, percussion). The duo formed the band in 2017 and released Frame And Curiosityin 2019.

This is an excellent disc, very adventurous yet accessible as there are plenty of earworms to be had. The disc opens with “L’etranger�, a sprawling nine minute piece traversing many moods and timbres with great bass lines, excellent horns, calming flute, tasty keyboards and complex rhythmic patterns. The drummer is quite the beast. Next is “Timbre And Prayer�, a mellower track with gorgeous bass and saxophone. More tasty bass and saxophone can be found on the jazzy “Komsija� and on “Across The Threshold� the horn work is absolutely lovely. “Anonymous� is a more upbeat jazz rock piece that includes a spellbinding flute solo while “Carefree� is a pretty ballad featuring delicate acoustic guitar and lots of horns. The short “Long Ago (Intro)� is a moody piece with creative flute and accordion and is followed by the just as moody “Far Away�, a slow moving ballad with more fabulous horn interplay, including some gorgeous saxophones.

Frame And Curiosity is a creative foray into modern jazz that is both melodic and cerebral, engaging the listener on many different levels, ensuring a tremendous listening experience. Highly recommended.
