Milwaukee singer/songwriter Peggy James -- whose genre-defying music has drawn comparisons to the Beatles and Elton John, as well as attracted such session legends as Genesis guitarist Daryl Stuermer -- injects her fifth album with a healthy dose of Midwestern melancholy. Mark my words: Paint Still Wet will be the perfect soundtrack to what looms as the autumn of our discontent. Relying on a little bit of pop, a little bit of jazz, a little bit of country and a whole lot of honesty, emotion and conviction, James has crafted a timeless record.
Her sweet, dusty vocals and her rich acoustic guitar are backed by some of Milwaukee’s top musicians including Stuermer; guitarist, bassist and Paint Still Wet’s producer Jim Eannelli, harmonica player Jim Liban (who has shared the stage with everyone from Hendrix to Journey) and former Blue Man Group drummer John Calarco.
From the irresistible melodies on “Holdin’ Hands” to Eannelli’s and Liban’s searing solos on “Head Over Heels” to “Scarlet and Gold,” which sounds straight out of the Seventies and would be right at home on SiriusXM’s Yacht Rock Radio today, Paint Still Wet represents James’ broad palette and demonstrates why she’s been pegged as one of America’s premier female singer/songwriters.
