Yes, I will admit to being rather late to the party.
Overhaul hail from The Netherlands and formed in 2013. They soon released their debut EP the following year titled Daybreak. I have not heard it but in my hands is the band’s debut full length platter titled Notes by an Unstable Muser, released in the fall of 2017.
Band members:
Samuel de Vries (vocals)
Richard Sluijk (guitars)
Glenn Bergmans (keyboards)
Gielian Meessen (bass guitar)
Sander van den Broek (drums)
Big crunchy riffs begin the alternative metal of “Blue Box” followed by mellower and more atmospheric moods. The use of keys is very prevalent and the band offer up some nice moody soundscapes along with their heavier inclinations. Some nice piano/keyboards and a catchy chorus highlight the mellower “Stone Intact” where the riffs are not as intense but still slice through the atmospheric soundscape for quite a dramatic effect. More knife edged riffs can be heard on “The Dance” along with a background of subtle electronics and synths. “Storm” offers up a darker and more stark setting with cool synth lines and mood laden soundscapes while “My Heart Suggestible” features quiet guitar arpeggios and softer vocals. The heaviness returns with the shifting and twisting riff progressions in “Aeons & Life”, another excellent track.
Overhaul have made an excellent debut with Notes by an Unstable Muser. This should appeal to a wide range of metal and progressive music fans who appreciate a darker mood in their music.
A Freya Records release.
