With the brilliant opener "The Destination Onward", progressive metal legends Fates Warning once again announce to the world their place in history, as they deliver another winner of an album with Long Day Good Night, their 13th studio platter in a career that has now spanned close to 40 years. While there have been rumors that Long Day Good Night might indeed be the final statement in a long and glorious career, that remains to be seen, but for now, this new Metal Blade Records release checks all the boxes and gives the lister everything they love from this classy band.
Back to "The Destination Onward", a vibrant prog-metal track filled with catchy hooks sung by the always impressive Ray Alder, classic Jim Matheos angular styled riffing, acrobatic drumming courtesy of Bobby Jarzombek, and the ever solid bass playing of Joey Vera, it's another Fates Warning classic in the making. "Shuttered World" works for many of the same reasons, perhaps an even heavier song, but those melodies are so memorable, with Ray once again putting in a fine performance. While a very long album at roughly 75-minutes, Long Day Good Night does have its occasional meandering moments, as on the moody, near 8-minute "The Way Home", and the atmospheric tracks "When Snow Falls" and "Under the Sun", but even those songs are solid, if slightly on the long side. Other album highlights include the blistering "Scars", the ultra catchy "Now Comes the Rain", the venomous metal rockers "Liar" and "Glass Houses", and the complex epic "The Longest Shadow of the Day", a wild track filled with some sick guitar riffs, solos, and drum work.
All in all, a really strong album that perhaps would have been even tighter with the trimming of a couple of tracks, but as I mentioned above there aren't any bad songs here. Long Day Good Night might not be quite up to the level of their two most recent releases Theories of Flight and Darkness in a Different Light, but it's close behind, and another excellent release from this legendary band.
