Embon, Pablo: Harmony Tales

I have to say that it’s rare to come across such an energetic collection of tracks that immediately allow you to relax into them in the way that Harmony Tales from Israel based Pablo Embon somehow manages to. Thoroughly ensconced in the world of jazz and gentle fusion, this multi-instrumentalist just seems to have a knack for expressing some amazingly vibrant outbursts in the most natural and unforced ways. The opening pair of “Vintage Lover” and “Calling Out” are prime examples of what’s going down here, the former a full on exploration of dexterity and daring, but all with a pure eye for melody and accessibility. The latter, on the other hand, plays it much cooler, piano and synths bouncing off a smooth vibe that still has time to allow some more discordant moments to appear and the occasional burst of electric guitar to solo in style.

A much more tender side arrives in “My Little Magic Box”, where much of the virtuosity on show is cleverly shelved in favour of a more heartfelt helping of emotion. Although that’s not to say that the more exuberant excursions don’t come with the same honesty and personality, “Our Time” sweeping you up in a swirl of funktastic organ that can’t fail to bring a smile, while “The Voice Of Truth” arrives with such a sparkle that the message is clear.

There’s real heart and soul in play on Harmony Tales and yet there’s just a hint of devil may care sprinkled over these crafted and cared for compositions. Perfectly packaged and delivered they may be, but at this album’s core is a desire to have fun and that’s something you’ll do every time you take it for a spin.
