Riverside: Lost ’n’ Found - Live In Tilburg
Lost ’n’ Found - Live In Tilburg is something of a bitter sweet release; a live album of beauty, power, honesty and no little skill reminding simultaneously of just how invigorating the enigmatic Polish prog from Riverside really is, while also taking us back to what could and should have been. Initially available as a concert exclusive release on the band’s 2015 Love, Fear And The Time Machine tour, the band were in full flight at that stage in their development, the line up of Mariusz Duda (vocals, bass), Piotr Grudzinski (guitar), Michal' Łapaj (keyboards) and Piotr Kozieradzki (drums) pulling together all the strands of their catalogue to this point to deliver albums and shows that confirmed that Riverside had rather sneakily become melancholic prog giants. And then, tragically, Grudzinski died suddenly of a pulmonary embolism aged only 41. Riverside have continued on since then with guitarist Maciej Meller initially as a live-only member who contributed occasionally in the studio, before announcing him a few years down the line as a fully fledged member - although we’ve yet to hear the full studio results of that coming together.
At this stage those events were all in the future and Riverside were presenting the (then) here and now, this 13 track live excursion not maybe concentrating on LF&TTM quite as much as you might expect and yet, with such a back catalogue, maybe that’s exactly as it should have been. It feels a little churlish to break this album down track by track, because - especially having witnessed the tour it was recorded on - a night with Riverside is always a journey of ups, downs and many more ups again - pacing, mood and atmosphere just as important as the songs themselves and this live document is no different. Duda himself was and remains a captivating frontman who is clearly deeply involved with the music and words his band create, but just listen to the heart wrenching guitar solo from the much missed Grudzinski and poignant keys-work on “Conceiving You” to understand just how vital each element of this band are in the rounded and enveloping soundscapes they produce. With quite phenomenally sympathetic percussive contributions from Kozieradzki, it’s how this band interlock as a unit that makes “We Got Used To Us” the moving experience it is and “The Same River” bristle with intensity.
Riverside are true prog pioneers and they are masters at their art. However, more than that this is a band capable of creating genuine emotions within their music that reach out and touch their audience. Maybe then it’s unsurprising that even taking into account their studio excellence, it’s live where they truly shine and possibly never more so than here. I truly found myself closing my eyes while listening to this album and being whisked back to the night of this tour that I experienced. Few live albums have that power and few bands possess that spirit. Riverside did and thankfully, they still do.
