Rosetta Stone: Cryptology

Rosetta Stone is a gothic rock band hailing from the UK. The project formed around 1985 by Porl King and released their debut An Eye For The Main Chance in 1991. Eventually Porl took a nineteen year break before releasing Seems Like Forever in 2019. The band’s latest effort is titled Cryptology, released in 2020 on Cleopatra Records.

The music presented on Cryptology is clearly in the gothic rock genre, somewhat dark but not overtly so, with electronic beats, synthesized sounds and decent guitar work. Porl has deep resonating voice, ideally suited to the genre and he knows how write catchy hooks. This isn’t complicated stuff, but it is quite memorable sometimes reminding me of The Sisters Of Mercy and even Depeche Mode on the more electronic numbers.

“Shock� is the opening track and first single with its deep bass heavy groove, catchy electronics and addictive chorus. The shimmering keyboards and catchy processed vocals in “Valiant Try�, the simple yet effective bass line in “In Black�, the super tasty chorus in “With This (I’m Done)� and deep low end in the melodic “Soon� are certainly worthy of your time.

Yes, this isn’t ground breaking or earth shattering but for all you gothic rock fans out there I urge you to check it out. I’m enjoying this one quite a lot.
