Potter’s Daughter: Casually Containing Rage

Potter’s Daughter is Virginia duo Dyanne Potter Voegtlin (vocals, piano, keyboards) and Jan-Christian Vögtlin (bass, guitar, guitar synth, drum programming). Both musicians are classically trained and Voegtlin has frequently toured Europe as a pianist. The band formed in New York City when Voegtlin was attending the Manhattan School of Music and released their debut album The Blind Side in 2018. Their latest effort is an EP titled Casually Containing Rage, released on Melodic Revolution Records.

Besides Voegtlin and Vögtlin, guests include Amit Chatterjee (guitar), Patrick Carmichael (drums), Tom Borthwick (soundscaping) and David Greene (radio broadcast).

The disc contains three tracks with a running time of around fourteen minutes. It’s short but there is enough here to give you a feel what this band is all about. Sophisticated art pop would likely be a safe categorization.

The most unique characteristic I hear are the complex vocal arrangements and Voegtlin’s unique tone and range. At times the vocals might be an acquired taste but as I listened, the more they grew on me and now they are one of my favourite aspects of the disc. The first track “To My Love” is highlighted by its unique vocal arrangement and an excellent lead guitar solo that conveys all the right moods over the song’s laid back groove. A pretty piano begins “Accidentally Like A Martyr”, a beautifully written heart wrenching ballad. My favourite is the soulful tinged “We Could Be” highlighted with well placed synth guitar. The socially conscientious lyrics and impactful radio broadcasts bringing to light George Floyd and Ahmaud Arbery give this one added meaning.

Potter’s Daughter is an interesting band, combining intelligent arrangements, excellent melodies and pop-prog leanings. I would certainly be curious to hear what they can do on a future long player.
