Robert Jackson is a relatively unknown musician/singer-songwriter hailing from Westchester, New York. One reason for that may be due to a lack of web presence as it was difficult finding information on the artist. He released his first album Survivor on the War on Rock in 1995 and his follow up titled Personal Jesus, released in 1998, is the subject of this review. Better late than never as they say so hopefully the word will get it out as this is a decent mainstream rock album, with a quirky undercurrent and thought provoking lyrics focusing on social commentary and the human condition. The first track “Personal Jesus”, is an energetic rocker with catchy riffs and Jackson’s baritone vocals. Acoustic and electric guitar intertwine in the slower “Knockin’ On The Door”, having another catchy melody and earworm-like lead and backing vocals. The punky “Dead Yuppies On The Highway” has good energy with a cool surf guitar riff while the next couple tracks, “Jamie Says” and "Gunfire In The Distance” channel Lou Reed and Warren Zevon respectively and are probably my two favourite on the disc.
Although this received a few negative reviews upon its release I quite liked it and its forays into ‘70s rock stylings sound decent to these ears. By all means check it out.
