Rozmainsky & Mikhaylov Project: I Am A Stranger In The Earth
Rozmainsky & Mikhaylov Project (henceforth RMP!) are a Russian outfit named, unsurprisingly, for the two main protagonists, Vladimir Mikhaylov (guitars & percussion) and Ivan Rozmainsky (keyboards). This second full-length release under the RMP banner is basically one long, predominantly instrumental, track broken in to sections which, as much as anything, allow for changes of tone and mood as the piece develops. No storyline is provided but the cover and title indicate an other-worldly character transported to Earth and finding their way in this new territory- a stranger in a strange land, if you will. Much of the accompanying music occupies a mid-point between trance, psych and ambient, with interesting use on occasions of an eastern mystical feel, along with some more atonal sections. Mikhaylov’s guitar work is at times Floydian, at other points it has some more grit and edge. Leonid Perevalov provides clarinet on a number of tracks which adds another flavour to the sonic palette. RMP are particularly adept in the slower, more brooding sections - “On A Factory Of Broken Dreams”, with its dark keyboard tones and heavy use of echo being a good illustration of this. Tracks like “X-Mas Child. Innocence & Experience”, with its use of children’s voices, is a little cheesy but it does have a more positive vibe which by this stage is welcome. Taken as a whole, this is an enjoyably atmospheric listen that retains a sense of cohesion throughout the varied sections.
