Jurjendal, Robert: Water Finds A Way
With his latest work, Water Finds A Way, Estonian guitarist Robert Jurjendal continues his journey into wide reaching instrumental soundscapes. If anything this collection of tracks strips things back even further, his custom built guitar with Sustainer pick-ups aligning for his notes and intentions to ring on and fill voids that would otherwise remain empty. Conceptual in purpose, that these pieces remain wordless and that Jurjendal ponders that the sensitive listener will be able to discern the album’s meaning, I’ll leave it up to others to try and lay down what those intentions are. However, what is apparent is the beauty and poise on show across an album that while split into separate pieces, undoubtedly comes together as one singular journey.
Touch, tone and texture are key here, the atmospheres conjured up shimmering and light in a way that really does paint pictures, although the singularity in focus can result in sittings to take the whole album in as a whole being a challenge on occasion. That said, experienced in the right moment, there isn’t a weak passage, with the sympathetic manner in which this album has been placed together clearly coming from the heart and indeed the soul of the man behind it.
With careful atmospherics and arrangements also key in conveying the feeling of Water Finds A Way, this is a gentle album that still insists you give your way of thinking over to it but with other little elements such as gentle voice and cello embellishing the journey it’s a task that’s well worth the effort. Robert Jurjendal doesn’t aim to produce the most readily accessible sounds but if you can get under the skin of Water Finds A Way, there’s no doubt that the rewards are bountiful and last long in the memory.
