It's seems a little pretentious to release a Greatest Hits CD when you have only recorded two studio CDs and never actually had a Hit. But Deadline Music saw an opportunity and released Odd Man Out's latest CD Greatest Hits.
Odd Man Out is the side project for Mr. Big drummer Pat Torpey in conjunction with Lanny Cordola (House of Lords) and bassist Chuck Wright (Quiet Riot). Torpey handles all of the vocals and most songs have one or two guest musicians on them. The music is radio-friendly rock-n-roll in the vein of Bad English or The Cult.
I never heard the first two CDs, Odd Man Out and Y2K but the collection of songs on the CD blend together well and there really isn't any feel that the music was recorded two years apart. On songs like "I Really Don't Mind" and "On a Bender" where Wright's bass is higher in the mix, the songs work much better. "Lemoncello", probably my favorite of the songs, reminds me of Gigolo Aunts. Torpey is an adequate singer, but nothing that makes the CD special. And that best describes this release. Good but not really special.
Greatest Hits is a solid release of straight forward rock with a touch of pop. I could probably recommend two dozen CDs that fall into this category that are better than this, but there are hundreds that aren't as good. So if you're looking for an accessible rock CD to add to your collection, this one would be recommended.
