Neuhauser, Ronnie: Ronnie Neuhauser’s Styrocultural Antidote - Stupid Like Cow

Continuing our deep dive into Ronnie Neuhauser’s Styrocultural Antidote project. This time we are exploring his 2008 effort titled Stupid Like Cow. If you have checked out my review of Ballet of the Elephant, this one continues in the same vein. Excellent rock fusion is what this disc brings in spades. Besides Neuhauser’s fantastic guitar, the trio is rounded out with Fran Merante (drums) and Mike Perez (bass). Guest musician Steve Clarke provides bass on three tracks.

In case you have not heard, Neuhauser is a fabulous axe slinger. Here are ten tracks brimming with his creative fills and scintillating riffs. The disc opens up with “Did You Make Any Money With That?”, a pure fusion extravaganza with Neuhauser’s singing guitar laying down fantastic textural riffs and fiery solos along with a happening bass line. There is even some Zappa-esque humour cropping up, albeit very briefly, and its not surprising as he appears to be one of his biggest influences. On “Rosanna Rosanna Santana” I hear some Eastern elements in the melody to go along with some wicked string bending. “Sticky Buns” is another excellent track having one of stickiest (excuse the pun) guitar lines on the disc but perhaps my favourite is “4 Below”, an amazing piece of experimental fusion. The guitar, bass and drums are expertly played as tricky rhythms and a variety of sounds, including an almost trippy background soundscape had me reeled in right from the beginning. It is one of the most creative fusion tracks I have heard in some time and Perez’s bass just has to be heard.

Another excellent album from Ronnie Neuhauser, a vastly underrated talent that deserves a wider audience. Highly recommend.
