Art: Asylum

Music is an artform and with this Italian band, hailing from Bologna, they take it to the next level on their sophomore album titled Asylum, released in 2019, the follow up to their debut effort Planet Zero, which I have yet to hear. The band play a sophisticated and modern form of melodic progressive rock, at times veering into heavy prog and progressive metal. In the band are:

Ivano Zanotti (drums)
Diego Quarantotto (bass)
Roberto Minozzi (guitar)
Enrico Lorenzini (keyboards)
Denis Borgatti (vocals, piano, Rhodes)

I love how the band incorporate heavy and soft, able to quiet things down as well as make powerful statements with hard hitting riffs and soaring vocals. The band is very talented with tight musicianship all the way through the lineup. Many of the songs start low key with quiet effects and moody soundscapes like the opening track “No Way Out”. Soon a crisp groove breaks free along with melodic keyboards and synths. The smooth transitions and finely crafted arrangement are definite high points. The catchy chorus in “Black Mist” is a real head sticker while “B. Case” begins with a darker mood and edgy staccato rhythmic interplay. Dark waves of synths and excellent lead vocals highlight the somewhat somber but very catchy “Seven Stones” and more wonderful synths and guitar can be heard on the moody “The Doctor” which includes one of the tastiest guitar solos on the disc.

There are no duds her, every song is of high quality and the melodies are long lasting. Asylum is a superb album and one I can easily recommend.

A Slip Trick Records release.
