Bertoni, Alessandro: Monarkeys

Monarkeys is a 3 song instrumental EP that leaves me wanting more from keyboardist Alessandro Bertoni, and that’s a good thing. If you live by the adage, leave them wanting more, than an EP of your best stuff is a good strategy. Kick back and enjoy the rocking tracks as Bertoni lets his band shine alongside him. The band is extremely tight in what I can only describe as instrumental prog rock that has touches of jazz fusion, heavy guitar and keyboards, and complex arrangements. “Hopeless Delight” kicks things off with airy keyboards and fretless bass sounding like a deranged carnival ride. Nieri and Bertoni each get solo spots, and the band simmers until everything fades off as Bertoni’s keyboards end the track. “Choler” shows off a more fusion feel, with some heavy riffing, and excellent unison soloing sections, this is a high energy track. The final track “Gates of Arcadia” opens with symphonic feel of layered keyboards that open the song, things again get heavy with a mind blowing guitar solo from Nieri. Bertoni closes the track with just keyboards, a very satisfying listen.

Bertoni is backed by Craig Blundell on drums, Ric Fierabracci on bass, and Andre Nieri on guitars. All are fine players lending their talents to this project; let’s hope we get a full length release of this lineup soon.
