Initially, Ivy Gold wasn’t supposed to be a band. But thank the gods of rock that things don’t always go according to plan.
Guitarist Sebastian Eder (Avalon) happened to share some song sketches with vocalist Manou, who was intrigued enough to start writing lyrics and melodies. Before long, the two emerged with an intriguing set of blues-influenced rock demos, found like-minded musicians whose resumes include working with Joe Bonamassa, Glenn Hughes and Amy Winehouse, dubbed themselves Ivy Gold, and self-released their debut record, Six Dusty Winds.
Sounds so easy, right? While the process probably experienced some hiccups along the way, Ivy Gold has emerged with a killer debut album that emphasizes ambitious songs with dramatic arrangements, Manou’s Sass Jordan-like voice, and the talents of each individual band member.
Six Dusty Winds was recorded in 2020 at studios in the United States, the United Kingdom and Germany, but its cohesiveness is apparent throughout. Nearly every track is punctuated by Eder’s stellar soloing, and Manou sings with passion and conviction. The title cut is a standout, followed by “We Are One” and “Retribution” -- all powerful and memorable songs that hint at Ivy Gold’s potential longevity.
If you’re a fan of classic rock infused with contemporary blues and loaded with melodies, let the songs on Six Dusty Winds blow your way.
