Emptiness: Vide

Given this album’s gruesome cover art, you might expect this music to be abrasive or shocking. It is, but probably not in the ways you expect. I was thinking it might be something closer to grindcore, something rough, aggressive, angry, and predictable. But that’s not what I heard. Instead of screaming, I heard whispering; and instead of blistering guitars, I got midtempo arpeggios mixed with ambient sounds.

If you’ve listened to Emptiness before, you might also be surprised. This release is a bit different from what they’ve done before. The band was never afraid to experiment, but here they’ve taken things in directions that are difficult to describe. The music is dark, claustrophobic, and uncanny. At times, it lingers around you like a thick fog. To listen is to wander into uncertain places, the kind you might experience in a nightmare or when you feel feverish. There’s rarely any sense of stability or purpose. It’s probably as angry as more aggressive albums, but it confronts you with something other than obvious rage. Instead, the voices beckon to you from all over, their whispered words never completely clear or friendly. If you’re expecting something upbeat from this album, you should look elsewhere. But if you want to wander into the strange and the unknown, you could do much worse.

Did I like it? Yes and no. I had to listen to it a few times before its overall atmosphere began to win me over. The middle of the album is strong, but things shift from the strange to the familiar by the end. Check out “Plus Jamais” and see what you think.
