Juglans Regia: Memorie del Presente
Released in 2019, the Memorie del Presente EP from Italians Juglans Regia was the band’s first outing of any sort for over a decade. With their earlier releases, Visioni Parallele and Controluce, growing from what appeared to be a grunge/doom/metal base with strong progressive leanings into a much more streamlined hard-rock-prog beast, this 20 minute or so effort finds the band taking some mighty steps forward.
Both “L’imperdonabile” and “Maschere”, which open proceedings, are fast, furious and uncompromising, we’re now veering properly into progressive metal territory and it’s a look that suits this band to a tee. The keyboard work from Lappo Martini is now the perfect foil for the crunching riffs and fret flurries of Antonello Collini and when paired to the urgent but thoroughly in control Italian vocals from Alessandro Parigi, the trio make a real impact. “Primo Istinto” proves that the same impression can be made in a slower configuration, before the almost siren-keyboards of “Le Virgole del Tempo” close things out in real style - the guitar solo being particularly impressive.
Juglans Regia really have moved things up another gear with this EP and hopefully they’ll be much more active in terms of writing and releasing new music from here on in.
