Mesheen: A Matter Of Time

A Matter Of Time is an album originally recorded in 1994, yet not released at that point; now the band, inactive since that time, have reconvened to finally issued it in remastered form. To be honest, it will probably get a better reception now than it would have at the time, as Mesheen play an unashamed style of hard rock that would have gone down great on Sunset strip in the late 80’s but sunk like a stone by the middle of the next decade.

The opener “Fight For The Peace” gives a good indication as to what to expect, a short acoustic intro before powerful riffs usher in an anthemic mid-paced number. Ted Heath’s gravelly voice is one of the standouts and suits the material generally, although is a bit strained on the higher notes. Other highlights are the bluesy rocker “Bad Reaction”, the decent acoustic ballad “The Bigger They Are” (which has echoes of Poison’s “Every Rose Has It’s Thorn”) and the uptempo, punchy “Fool For Believin’”. The standout however is the slow-burning title track which builds nicely and really suits Heath’s voice. The guitar interplay throughout the album is another plus point, definitely adding to the sound.

Ultimately, A Matter Of Time has its share of ‘by the numbers’ rockers which lack the impact of the aforementioned songs, and the production is perhaps a bit rough around the edges " although this does add to the album’s charm as well. It’s good to see the band’s hard work at the time finally get a release, and hopefully this will give Mesheen some momentum to get back in the studio.
