Retched: Horrific (Single)
When I was in high school, I jammed with some good friends and often recorded what I thought were our better efforts. I wasn’t much of a guitar player back then (and I’m not much better now), but I had a great time playing with those guys. From time to time, I think back on those days and dig out the old recordings. They’re pretty rough, but they’ll always stand for the fun we had. Nothing specific ever came from all this, but it was fun, and I’d like to think it led to a lifetime love of music.
I’m thinking about all of this because Retched has a roughly similar story. It’s mostly the outgrowth of a group of metalheads (originally called Avatar) from the 80s that recorded some stuff that ended up in storage. But, unlike my old recordings, these recordings were actually pretty good and showed enough promise that band member David DerMinasian worked hard so he could eventually share them with the public. The result was The Overlord Messiah, an EP that he posted on Bandcamp in 2017, thirty years after Avatar made the recordings. The music is old school thrash (or just thrash since it definitely wasn’t old school in 1988). It’s a pretty strong release and is definitely something I would have enjoyed back in high school. If you’re curious about it, check it out at Retched’s Bandcamp page.
With “Horrific,” DerMinasian builds on The Overlord Messiah with new single that is supposed to tease a full-length album scheduled for release in 2022. DerMinasian wrote the song, plays all the instruments, and wrote the lyrics. You can find the song on Bandcamp. It’s a bit more aggressive than the music on The Overlord Messiah and makes for a good listen. I especially liked the vocals and the nifty breakdown in the middle. I’ll look forward to the album.
