Karnel, Bruno: Evaporation des voix off

French multi-instrumentalist Bruno Karnel is a new name for me, so I was not sure what to expect with his latest album titled Evaporation des voix off released in 2020. The album was recorded live in studio during the lock down. Karnel (guitar, charango, vocals) is joined by Julien Waghon (bass guitar) and Sonia (cajon, backing vocals).

Karnel has a number of solo releases (both full length and EPs) to his credit and on the new album all of the EP Satellite 3 is performed as well as two tracks from his Satellite 4 EP and one from his last album titled Alma.

This is a relatively short release, thirty-eight minutes spread over eight tracks beginning with “Après-demain”, a relaxing listen featuring Karnel’s calming vocals, in French, and lovely acoustic guitar. An interesting chord progression and subtle musical changes add the progressive factor. There is an off kilter feel to “Nuit des Olmèques”, another progressive folk/world offering but here the guitar is enriched with psychedelic elements. On “Adour” the band incorporate some heavier riffs to go along with well placed keyboards, or at least that is what they sound like to me. Again, there is a psychedelic feel at work. The longest track is “ȊIes espace”, featuring the synthesizer specialist Frédéric Gerchambeau. A repetitive guitar leads into world instrumentation and interesting synth sounds. Overall, a very cool track.

Karnel has a unique sound, combining folk, world and progressive into an unusual twisting of eclecticism. By all means check it out.
