Kali Trio: Loom
A Swiss trio who first regaled us with their idiosyncratic sounds via their 2019 Riot debut, Kali Trio now look set to challenge the senses with Loom, a four track album that is multifaceted and intricate in a manner that truly takes time to break down. So often when listening to the sweeping swirls of “Shipol” or the almost nothingness of “Dry Soul” did I consider that very little was actually taking place and yet I couldn’t stop myself from leaning in closer to unearth this album’s inner intention. In many ways, if you get distracted while the latter reveals its workings, it’s quite easy to stop listening to this music as a whole and consider some of the more ambient moments as sounds that are happening in real life round about you. I mean, for all the life of me, the shuuuucck of what I presume is a hi-hat, but which in fact may be a piece of fabric being slapped repeatedly against a table, simply isn’t in time with the thumping heartbeat at this piece’s core. Add in constantly elongating piano and some timely howls of despair from the guitar and the doomy framework really should hold you at arms length and yet its a cold embrace which proves utterly beguiling - a loveless experience that you simply can’t get enough of becoming ever more uncomfortable as it continues on and on and on……..
And these are only two of the soundscapes laid out, “Transitoriness” possibly even darker and starker, where a piercing, metronomic snare slap remains the only constant as guitars stab, percussion clatters and clacks and the occasionally repetitive melody offers hope, before quickly stealing it away - the track growing and growing as it meanders and yet purposefully marches on. There is also a live performance video of this track online and I have to say that it’s even more captivating than the audio alone. Truly this is music where headphones should be mandatory and life simply ceases to be. All of which is without even mentioning “Folding Space” and its utterly mesmerising use of rhythm, but again never quite as you expect and always in a daringly singular manner.
The four compositions on Loom make up just over 45 minutes of music and not one second is wasted in creating the Kali Trio world, a place where the only constant is evolution and where the expectedly unexpected awaits around every pulsating beat.
