Boddy, Ian & Bernhard Wöstheinrich: Moiré

Alternating accents in the sequential currents of "Accretion" immediately signal the new recording by longtime UK synthesist, Ian Boddy—Moiré being the eighteenth offering, no less, in Boddy's DiN series, and a collaboration with Bernhard Wöstheinrich. An accretion is an incremental buildup, and that's exactly what the opener does via a throbbing bass foundation and percussive pulses. "Perambulator" is similarly heavily rhythmic—melodic shadings are just that—but the end result is closer to a film score than the cookie-cutter trance or techno tuneage that's become omnipresent, and much more inventive and involving. Track 3, "Diffractions," is an ambient piece along the lines of "Remote Viewing" from Tangerine Dream's Exit or Steve Roach. The intensity resumes with the beat-heavy "Scorpio," peppered by zig-zag truncated arpeggiations (as though black rests were pasted down over the sheet music at specific intervals and fed into the mastercomputer). The workout this venomous pastiche will extract from subwoofers all over might cause system overloads. "Diaphragm" makes use of unique, very high quality samples, percolating textures and more deep bass, topped by a wistful string drone. "Fractalise" caters to its title with a mélange of timbres that follow a sample-and-hold scheme; obviously, the synthesists' communal palette is a stellar one stocked with an endless row of unique sounds that seem to roll in in conveyor belt fashion—the musicians therefore assume an architectural role and manicure their sonic edifices accordingly. "Method Count" is a more traditional layout, with new tones introduced gradually in a linear manner. "Cloister" marries a megalith of a layered bass drum sample to a reverberating bell tone that induces a haunting air of desolation and portent—rather Nine Inch Nails-esque, even, with the coat of textural abrasives this cut dons. "Smash & Grab" is the closer, the most accessible track, and sort of recalls what Tangerine Dream does with the Dream Mixes series—without making the listener jump to push stop! A great album of dense, rhythmic electronics. Mr. Boddy already has a nineteenth DiN entry.
