Chalice of Sin: Chalice of Sin

Having already known about Wade Black's (ex-Leatherwolf, ex-Seven Witches, War of Thrones, ex-Crimson Glory) ferocious vocal talents and screams from U.S Power Metallers Seven Witches, it is as a pleasure to review his contemporary project with the majestically named establishment of Chalice of Sin and to also discover that Alessandro Del Vecchio (Hardline, Jorn, Issa, Silent Force, Voodoo Circle) adds his keyboard signature marks into the mixture was a moment I was taking a huge amount of interest that left me very intrigued.

Joining alongside these two, we have Mirkko DeMaio (Mind Key, The Flower Kings) on drums and Martin Jepsen Anderson (Meridian, Anchorite) on guitars; sophisticatedly combing as a whole package to create a brand new Heavy/Power Metal outfit and phenomenon for many to enjoy.

All in all, this self-titled offering is a solid one as a whole, however it is definitely not a perfect one to say the least. For the most, there are many highs to talk about but also there are some poorer points that can come widely into discussion throughout the works displayed on the debut effort Chalice of Sin.

For me personally, the song writing suffers in places for less exciting and cheesy lyrics that do not deliver as well as they should to make the album somewhat go off the tracks for a slight tad. Tracks like 'Whisky' and 'The Fight' sound great musically but they just sound silly in places compared to the rest of the episodes that lead them astray from the depth of the compositions on this output. Surprisingly, there are even moments from 'The Fight' where you cannot even make out what Wade is singing about as the vocals seem a bit wavey and too disjointed that appears to be slightly disappointing.

Nonetheless, there are lots and lots of positives to point out during the bulk of the ambitious Chalice of Sin, so the panic is now over. Moving forward, we have the opening track 'Chalice of Sin' that delivers with one of hell of a punch that is layered with some tastily superb vocals from Black and the coolly constructed 'Sacred Shine' that neatly appear as a divine secret weapon that is purely a sublime highlight to remember.

Moreover, there is the spine tingling uniqueness of the terrifically dark 'Ashes of the Black Rose' smothered in a Power Metal Chorus that very much reminds me of a horror movie for some particular reason (in a good way of course) and additionally, we cam witness the chillingly haunting phrases of the impressive 'Through the Eyes of a Child', where the four are on top form with a pledge for a diverse branch of Heavy Metal and a more sinister work to say the least.

Chalice of Sin is a winner for the duration and I feel the band will do even better on a sophomore record, if one hopefully appears in the future of course. Personally, I think this a successful release and these guys could significantly experiment even further with the range of talent they have on board their almighty table that upholds the Chalice of Sin and a unique presence that they proclaim through their darker edge inside the musicianship.
