Head With Wings: Comfort In Illusion (EP)

Comfort in Illusion is a 3 song EP from New Haven Connecticut’s Head With Wings. The music is an interesting blend of ethereal textures that create a haunting atmosphere, while guitarists Brandon Cousino & Mike Short blend together extremely well with crisp rhythms, melodic soloing, and a bit of aggression to add an extra punch to the band’s sound.

“Of Uncertainty� opens with clean guitar lines while lead vocalist & lyricist Joshua Corum takes a page out of the Sufjan Stevens school of vocals. The music gets heavier for the chorus, and there is definitely has a modern twist. I am drawn to the guitar sound and playing of this band, a lot of clean tones are used, and just enough attack when it’s called for. “Contemplating the Loop� opens with atmospheric keys and that chimey guitar sound, and the more I listen, the melodies seep into my brain. Bassist Steve Hill & Drummer Andrew Testa are rock solid, and provide interesting and intricate flourishes that keep things interesting. “In A House With Clocks� closes the EP, opening with voices over a bed of that sweet clean guitar, and some Hackett like swells. This song is the most aggressive of the three songs, a lot of guitar lines weaving about, with the heavier tight rhythms driving the song. This song shows off the power the band has in their arsenal.

My only complaint is I would like to hear the band stretch out more instrumentally, for me the vocals tend to dominate, I’d like to hear the band let loose more. I really like the moods the band is able to convey with their music, and I look forward to their next full length release. Honestly, this one has grown on me with each listen, so, check them out!
