This Norwegian progressive-rock band with deep roots extending back to the early Seventies takes its name from a potato cultivator in wide production in Norway and other countries. But if you’re unfamiliar with the music of Kerrs Pink, don’t let that deter you from exploring Presence of Life, the band’s seventh album.
The group -- which blends prog and folk into a sound not unlike that of The Tangent and The Flower Kings -- has undergone multiple lineup changes over the years, settling on seven members for Presence of Life. Of particular note is vocalist Eirikur Hauksson, who also is a member of fellow Norwegian proggers Magic Pie.
The six songs here, which play out over about 49 minutes, are not as memorable as those by Magic Pie. But Kerrs Pink’s sophistication and dedication can be heard throughout, especially in the longer tracks such as “Resurrection,” "Away from Shadows" and “In Discipline and With Love.” Ample Hammond C3, Minimoog, Mellotron and even accordion infuse this material with a richness that recalls the vintage British prog of the Seventies. Given its complexity, it's easy to understand why Presence of Life is the first Kerrs Pink album since 2013’s Mystic Spirit.
You might not be singing these songs in your head all day long after hearing them, but they do make for a pleasant listen deserving of your attention.
