TSA: Live 1982 (DVD)

As someone who was not very familiar with TSA, I was curious why they would release a 20+ year old concert, TSA Live 1982. But my concerns were quickly erased once I saw the quality of the tape. The concert is recorded in a rather small venue so the cameras are close enough to capture all the action. The clothing (yellow jump suit worn by guitarist Andrzej Nowak) and hair is very dated, and it is hard to get over the horrible mustache on lead singer Marek Piekarczyk's face. But once you get used to it, the music and performance do a fine job of hooking you in.

All songs and song introductions are in Polish. The spoken parts have English subtitles. Piekarczyk's vocals are emotionally charged and the musicians seem to really enjoy themselves. I have watched the entire concert three times and have listened to the musical portion of it several other. The music does sound a little dated, but still is worth listening to. This is guitar-riff rock-n-roll with a Glenn Hughes like singer. There is nothing amazingly technical, but the band is very tight.

Musically, the ballad "Trzy Zapalki" and the rocking " Wyprzedaz" are definitely highlights. If you were into TSA in the 70s or 80s, I could see where having a chance to see them live would be of some value. As my first introduction to the band, I found the performance entertaining and the songwriting pretty good.

The CD is loaded with extras as well. There are four other concerts recorded (83,84,85,86) where the band plays one song each, a three song concert from 1981, and a documentary style "TSA in Concert" which contains 3 more songs. In addition, there are videos that the band made for "51", "Don't Worry Friend", "Marathon Runner" and "Race Machine Hero". Lastly, there are 14 songs from studio and live records other than this DVD.

This is mostly an 80s production. The quality, for being 1982, is fine, the music and performances are entertaining. This is highly recommendation to any fan of TSA. If you aren't a fan, but you dig 80s style rock-n-roll, and don't mind that everything is in polish, Live 1982 is worth the purchase price.
