Edenya: Silence
Here’s a band which formed in 2010 in Montgeron, France. Edenya released their self-titled debut in 2017 and have followed it with their 2020 release titled Silence. Originally the band started has a solo project for leader Marco. On their latest album a darker mood pervades many of the album’s eight tracks, a somewhat different take on atmospheric rock bringing in elements of prog, folk, ambient, and even a bit of alt-country.
Silence begins with “The Promise”, a darkly lit soundscape highlighted with an arpeggio guitar and husky female vocals. The vocals blend with the music in a near seamless fashion, a perfect fit for the band’s darker and melancholic pathways. Then, for a different twist, the music diverges into heavier progressive metal territory with touches of Middle Eastern in the melody before ending on a mellow note. The following track “Sabrina” starts very quiet and moody with excellent female vocals. It’s a mix of ambient and dark folk and includes some soaring lead guitar providing an edgy rock vibe. “Broken Love” is a mostly violin and piano instrumental piece, oozing with melancholy. The arpeggio acoustic guitar in the folky “All They Want” and the much heavier “Chaos” are songs of contrast, both equally interesting and of considerable depth. The title track is also the album’s longest at eleven minutes featuring acoustic and electric guitar with proggier leanings as the song ventures forward. Ambient, post rock, and progressive take equal turns making this a majestic and beautiful journey into the band’s sometimes minimal, sometimes robust sounds.
