The UK's new classic rock sensations Cats in Space are only four studio albums into their career, so it seems rather odd that we are already seeing a 'Best Of' compilation, but if you caught my interview with guitarist Greg Hart recently, he revealed that Diamonds was put together more to satisfy the need to get some music into a few European territories after new singer Damien Edwards lent his vocals to some classic tracks from the bands first few albums. These sounded so good, the band decided to flesh out the album with remixed versions of songs from the first three albums, a few from Edwards's debut with the band Atlantis, and a scorching, never before heard live rendition of "Greatest Story Never Told", recorded live in early 2020.
Also featured on Diamonds are a host of other gems, such as "Too Many Gods", "Mr. Heartache", the soaring "Chasing Diamonds", the irresistible "Hologram Man", "Scarecrow", and of course radio ready party rockers "2:59", "I Fell Out of Love With Rock n Roll" and "Listen to the Radio". Every track here is a complete winner, with Edwards sounding quite confident and incredible throughout (though we love you too Paul Manzi!) and no shortage of blazing guitars, bright keyboards, and hooks & hooks galore.
If you are new to Cats in Space, and love bands like Queen, Styx, Boston, Supertramp, City Boy, and ELO, then you owe it to yourself to dive into the music of this band, with Diamonds being a great way to get a nice introduction to some of their most memorable songs. Be prepared though to dive much deeper pretty quickly, as their catalog is absolutely superb.
