King Zebra: Survivors

Swiss Hard Rock band King Zebra have teamed up with Crusader Records to release their debut album Survivors, off the back of the success they enjoyed from their previous Single “Firewalker'', drawn from their 2017 self-titled EP.

King Zebra are straight from the school of mid and late 80’s raunchy hard rock and metal, reminiscent of bands Like Guns ’N’ Roses, Motley Crue, Bon Jovi and LA Guns. The music is energetic, fun, party rock with plenty of catchy hooks and anthemic choruses. This album would have been right at home being released around 1987 and probably would have done very well. These days however it feels somewhat generic and has a bit of the “been there, done that” about it. That being said though, the performances are strong throughout and the songs are just as good as most of their obvious influences. The album kicks off with “Under Destruction” which is a straightforward hard rocker and is a play on words of “under construction”, however in this case it deals with the lies and misinformation that lead to mistrust or social demolition. “She Don’t Like My R’n’R is a raunchier one with that late 80’s vibe with a definite 80’s pop sensibility and some of the usual inclusions from that era, such as, chanted backing choirs and either real horns or keyboards that sound like horns. The song deals with the problems of having a relationship with someone who doesn’t like rock music. Probably something we can all relate to. “Wall of Confusion” is one of the singles the band has released a video for and has a guest vocal appearance from Guernica Mancini from Thundermother. The song is both uptempo and fairly hard rocking while also having some of that pop element there as well. The song is aimed lyrically at those who believe everything they hear. “On The Run” continues the commercial attack. Again handled very well with some strong catchy hooks and professional slickness. “Hot Cop Lady” gives off a strong Motley Crue feel and is another of the singles made into a video. Heavy and raunchy and like many of the tracks has some cool backing vocals. The subject matter in this song is exactly what you would expect from the music. “We’re the survivors” is the last of the 3 singles and has a bit of Bon Jovi and Billy Idol vibe as do several of the other songs. Another catchy, hook laden song. Zebr

a King on Survivors is all about recapturing that commercial hard rock and metal sound that was so huge in the mid and late 80’s and for the most part they do an excellent job at doing exactly that. The songs are well written and performed with a confident professionalism. The Production is slick and fairly powerful. So for fans of that specific genre from that era or people who just like commercial hard rock which is easy to access, Survivors is sure to please. For those who don’t wanna relive 80’s commercial hard rock in the vein of some of the bands mentioned above then Survivors is most likely not for you.
