Bastette: Exposed

Exposed is the opening statement from Sheffield’s Bastette, a five-piece fronted by the beguiling vocal presence of Caroline Kenyon, a young lady with the power of Lzzy Hale and the depth of Ann Wilson, which is quite the combination. Thankfully the four chaps who back this forceful presence bring more than enough to dispel any early thoughts that they might be a one woman band.

“Stand Back” grinds and swirls, Halestorm and The Pretty Reckless already brought to mind but there’s a deeper, gothic, electro-edge here that already sets Bastette apart. Clever dynamics are utilised to make “Talk About It” greater than the sum of its parts, while “Sick & Twisted” sits atop a swirling melody and regimental beat to get its message across. Add in the brooding “Rollercoaster” and full force “Poison” and this opening foray from Bastette may be brief at only sixteen minutes, but it makes up for that brevity through its bold believability. Hopefully a full length release won’t be too far off into the future.
