Raphael Weinroth-Browne: Worlds Within Live
In January 2020, Canadian cellist and composer Raphael Weinroth - Browne released his album Worlds Within, an expansive single composition played over ten movements in the form of classical variations. Raphael is also known for his extensive creative output with bands such as The Visit, Musk Ox, Kamancello as well as his time touring with Norwegian heavy hitters Leprous. The inspiration for Worlds Within Live came after Raphael was invited by Progspace to perform several tracks online live. This was the initial impetus to record the whole album live.
Worlds Within Live, like its album version, is a sublime and transcendent experience. The music is both ethereal and meditative at times, while also pushing into more aggressive territory at others. Raphael slowly builds layer upon layer to subtly alter the landscape of the pieces and take the listener down other sonic paths. Containing elements ranging from atmospheric and moody to Post- Rock and even metal sensibilities as well as classical minimalism. Raphael pushes the envelope for the cello itself using the acoustic instrument with effects to take the instrument’s capabilities to the limit. Entrancing and emotional the music remains engaging throughout and Raphael’s skills and talents are on full display. His performance is the essence of both technical professionalism and emotional connection. This one man live performance of the layered and rich material on Worlds Within Live is tremendously impressive.
This music won’t be for your average rock or metal fan perhaps, however anyone looking for some beautiful, elegant, transcendent and impressive instrumental music that is not afraid to move from the classical to the modern should definitely check out this album. Raphael Weinroth - Browne is extremely talented and Worlds Within Live is a wonderfully relaxing and enjoyable listen.
