Scarecrow: Raise the Death’s Head

Now that Halloween’s over, most people are going to take down their decorations and replace all the scary stuff with other, more festive, holiday lights. That’s OK, but I’m going to miss the glowing pumpkins, the scary monsters, and the looming scarecrows. Fortunately, there are enough bands named “scarecrow” that I can get my fix of that creature pretty much any time.

This Scarecrow is a bay area band that has built up a solid reputation for well over a decade. They released a split album with Landmine Marathon back in 2008 and then didn’t really do much more recording for well over a decade. With this release, they are coming back with three new songs, all of which are worth hearing. Fans of Exhumed, Death Angel, and Hammers of Misfortune will be happy about this release since Scarecrow features members of all three bands. Things are leg by Matt Harvey on guitar and vocals; he is joined by Daniem Sisson on bass, Will Carroll on drums, and Bud Burke on guitar.

Fans of classic thrash metal will enjoy the opening track “Raise the Death’s Head” and the closing track “Victory?” for sure. Both tracks buzz with thrashiness and should definitely whet your appetite for more Scarecrow. I was especially fond of “Victory?” because it is so powerful and so fast. I’m always happy to listen to thrash and that tune is a great example of that style at its best.

The middle track “The Desparate Hours” is slower than the other two tracks, but it builds its energy in ways reminiscent of Metallica’s “Fade to Black.” I liked it, but I’m glad there was only one track like this. If you like a slower burn, this one has plenty of rewards. I recommend sticking around for it, especially if you like a good guitar solo.

Be sure to look up the cover art for this release. It’s filled with cool skeletons who are clearly up to no good.

I hope Scarecrow releases more music soon. I’m ready for it!
