Paradox Twin, The: Silence From Signals
Teaming up for a second time with White Star Records, The Paradox Twin return with an album that musically holds strong links with their debut, while lyrically moving in a different direction completely. The Importance Of Mr Bedlam was that debut and in taking its musical cues from the likes of Anathema saw the band move into what has rapidly become a crowded arena in recent times. The concept tackled was one of alien conspiracy theories and while hardly earth-shattering in theme, did make for an intriguing listen. Here on Silence From Signals, however, The Paradox Twin are hitting deep and in a way that is sure to touch many. With singer Danny Sorrell discovering that his son had been diagnosed with autism at almost the same time that he became a father for the second time, the seemingly random nature of the lives we lead and the paths we will follow became a theme he couldn’t ignore. Inspired by that notion, a story where twins are set on different trajectories by one having a disability that the other is not touched by began to form. The children’s father simply can’t reconcile this fact and soon events are set in motion where tragedy of the grandest scale becomes the only outcome. The story is stark and startling, yet it’s tackled with a real deftness of touch and sympathetic hand as Sorrell and co-vocalist Nicole Johnson combine quite spectacularly throughout.
There’s no doubt that the fragility of the music this concept walks hand in hand with helps build the tension and believability of the whole venture, a restraint in the arrangements allowing some harder hitting moments to truly break through as they hit their intended targets. From the outside it can all seem - as much of this current off-shoot of prog sometimes can - a little uneventful, but reach inside and the subtlety of the dynamics really pull you into music that seems to weave ever deeper webs to become entangled in. Big riffs are employed on occasion but there’s never a sense that we’re about to stride into a forceful prog-metal behemoth. And yet, I’d suggest that through clever little guitar motifs and melodies which are bolstered by some unobtrusive keyboards and programming, much of this album explodes with an inherent ferocity. It all comes together to make for seven tracks that deliver as one, and as such, breaking things down into a song by song exposition feels superfluous. However, rest assured that each and every piece is an involving, intricate journey and one where the subject matter sits intrinsically into the atmospheric worlds created for them.
Silence From Signals is a remarkably mature album and one which it’s difficult to believe comes from a band only a few years into their existence. It is also incredibly involving and as such makes for an experience of real depth and real quality.
