Wytch: Exordium

Another great album has crossed my listening desk. Wytch is a Swedish stoner rock/metal band which formed in 2016. It’s taken a few years, but the band released their debut album titled Exordium in May of this year and I have to say it has been well worth the wait.

This is such a solid album, beginning with the excellent lead vocals of Johanna Lundberg. Man does she have a set of pipes as her clean, melodic, and powerful vocals grace this album with pure heart and soul. The rest of the band is up to the challenge, setting the pace with juggernaut riffs, heavy drums and massive bass lines. The band also know how to play it mellow and atmospheric, adding a diversity to their sound, not one dimensional in the slightest. The first track “Black Hole” is as good an album opener you are likely to here in the stoner rock genre with its melodically heavy riffs, thunderous bass, powerful drumming and fantastic lead vocals. Her low key delivery here is so on point and when the need arises she can belt it out with the best of them. The ambient-like interlude is almost creepy with a cool echo effect on the vocals, distinct cymbal taps and moody atmospherics. The super tasty “The Saviour” starts with a mellow clean guitar, slightly psychedelic, before the heaviness is unleashed in the chorus. The intense heavy rock of “Evil Heart” with its great bass line, the bluesy tinged heaviness in the guitar led “Blood” and the addicting riff progression and passionate vocals in “Warrior” are more tracks not to be missed.

Wytch has produced another excellent debut album in 2021, an album that will surely satisfy fans of heavy rock and metal. Recommended.
