Electric Six: Streets of Gold

I am immediately struck that I am listening to a covers album by a band that I have never heard of in my life. What would possess anyone to purchase a covers album by an unknown act? What would possess an unknown act to record a covers album? I’m not sure, but here goes nothing.

Michigan natives Electric Six (anyone else thinking “A Christmas Story”) have varied tastes for sure, with covers ranging from INXS (“Don’t Change”), Alice Cooper (“No More Mr. Nice Guy”), Fleetwood Mac (“Little Lies”) and James Ingram/Michael McDonald’s (“Yah Mo B There”). Hmm, ok, let’s give this a whirl. Opening with INXS, the band sounds good, but lead vocalist Dick Valentine shows a limited range trying to match Michael Hutchence, and his spoken word ending comes off as rather childish. Vocals are often the weak point of most bands, and this applies to Electric Six. The further into the album you go, the more wearing it becomes. I’m not sure why they would record an album just to be schlocky, but why have fun at the expense of the listener? If this is a joke, and if it was momentarily funny, it quickly becomes annoying. As a live act, this might have legs, but even that would get tiring after a set. I will reiterate that the band works musically, and cover the songs well, but I honestly would not consider playing this CD more than once, that was all I needed to hear. The two bonus tracks are band originals, and do nothing to elevate the CD, and might be an indicator as to why this is a covers album.
