Norwegian drummer Bjarte K Helland, along with bandmates Ric Fierabracci on bass and Jarle H Olsen on guitars, has produced four tracks of quality instrumental prog metal fusion on this 22 minute e.p. The formula is not a particularly new one, blending twisting, turning melodies generally played at a high tempo, mixed with bursts of staccato riffing and technical soloing- familiar to fans of the likes of Planet X and Liquid Tension Experiment, to name but two. Whilst not wildly original, the compositional nous of Helland shows in the fact that the songs tend to flow effortlessly and keep the listener engaged rather than just become a foundation for dazzling shows of virtuosity. I’d certainly be interested to hear more, hopefully a full-length effort will follow.
