Bodyguerra -- named after a Spanish mare (long story) -- plays fat, punchy and melodic modern rock with tinges of blues rock and old-school classic rock. Indeed, the tagline for this German quartet is “we take rock to this decade.”
Fire & Soul is the aptly titled second album, full of both fire and soul. Of the 11 songs here, “Steelheart” emerges among the most promising, with soaring choruses and chugging guitars that capture the essence of this band. Throughout the album, octave-spanning Ela Sturm sings in a gritty, almost punkish voice, and the mid-tempo ballad “Behind the Clouds” emphasizes her vocal flexibility while also revealing a more sensitive side of Bodyguerra. It's arguably the finest song on the record.
Also noteworthy: Fire & Soul was recorded, mixed, mastered and co-produced by guitarist Rolf Munkes from Crematory and Empire fame.
An extra half-star for Guido Stoecker’s virtuoso guitar playing.
