Fictional Mirrors -- what a fantastic title! -- is a truly “solo” record by Chicago-based Warr guitarist Jason Blake. The entire album, all six songs and 49-and-a-half minutes of it, features only the haunting and eerie sounds of Blake's 12-string touch-style guitar that incorporates the range of both guitar and bass.
Perhaps best known for his work in the instrumental progressive-metal trio Aziola Cry, Blake takes listeners of Fictional Mirrors on a moving sonic journey that subtly combines his appreciation of both ambient music and prog metal. (That said, don’t expect to bang your head to any of these tracks -- even if titles such as “Shortcomings in Opposition” and “Ethos of the Swarm” suggest something heavier.) This is a laid-back collection ideal for relaxation, studying, writing or simply chilling.
This album is Part One of The Ternary Instinct Trilogy; Part Two is slated for release in summer 2022. Also in 2022, according to his website, Blake plans to release new music with comrades Joe Kopecky (Kopecky) and Craig Walkner (Far Corner), who collectively record and perform as the trio Backward Sky Falling.
