Tiberio, Ben: Rare Peace

Ben Tiberio is an old soul, the music harkens back to what I imagine the vibrant jazz club scene of the 50’s and 60’s would produce. Rare Peace is the debut CD from bassist Ben Tiberio who has been working in the jazz circles of the NYC scene since 2015. The 10 compositions were written over the course of the last decade, and Tiberio draws his inspiration from the human experience, his interactions with people, and their emotional auras according to the liner notes.

Tiberio deserves a tip of the cap for his mature beyond his year’s compositional chops. The music is intricate, fiery, and full of melody. He has surrounded himself with top notch musicians; I am particularly impressed with the amazing piano playing of Lex Korten, and the horns of Nathan Reising (Alto Sax) and Morgan Guerin (Tenor Sax). Korton blazes across the keys, but easily transitions the dynamics when there is a call for subtlety. “The Becky Song” may be my favorite track, a lot of interplay between the musicians, but honestly this can be found across the entire disc. The only misstep is the vocals in “(e)motion”, but outside of that, there are no flaws to be found. The closer “Rare Peace” seems to sum up more of Tiberio’s thoughts, as he describes the happiness he derives from the fleeting moments of joy in life, a smile from a stranger, a sip of coffee, moments of clarity amidst the chaos of life. It closes the CD with a stark and beautiful song that is simple and conveys the peace of mind that we are all looking for.

The album was recorded in one day, June 12th, 2019, a testament to the great musicians playing. Tiberio plays mostly Upright bass, and I really love that sound, he also plays electric bass and guitar on one track. Give this one a chance if you are a jazz lover, you will be rewarded handsomely for your time, an excellent listen.
