Mahogany Frog: In The Electric Universe

Now we return to my neck of the woods with the Canadian proggers Mahogany Frog, hailing from Winnipeg, Manitoba. The band has released seven studio albums, their latest titled In The Electric Universe. In the band are:

Graham Epp (guitar and keyboards)
Jesse Warkentin (guitar and keyboards)
Scott Ellenberger (bass and synthesizers)
Andy Rudolph (drums, synthesizers, samples)

The music is all instrumental, delving into electronic psychedelic space rock, with varying themes and moods transitioning between heavy and more surreal soundscapes. “Theme From P.D.” starts the disc off with a massive slice of spacey prog beginning with quiet synths unearthing a Middle Eastern melody, very nuanced and hypnotic. Soon, deep bass and guitar with a massive amount of fuzz leads into heavier territory accented with spacey synths and shimmering keyboards. More transitions unfold as the song ebbs and flows with trippy electronics and surging beats. Jimi Hendrix is channeled in the frenzy guitar heavy “Psychic Police Force” and with “Cube” the guitar buzzes like some obscure machine as the swirling keyboards and blasting synths makes for a driving space rock groove. The hypnotic “Floral Flotilla” builds on trip hop beats, synth drenched soundscapes and excellent guitar work.

In The Electric Universe will take you to another realm, where imagination and creativity have no boundaries. In a word…excellent.
