Burnt Belief: Mutual Isolation

Guitar master Jon Durant and Porcupine Tree’s Colin Edwin formed in 2012 and have subsequently released four albums with their latest titled Mutual Isolation. Recorded during the pandemic, the players couldn’t be in the studio together (the title pretty much says it all) but that has not prevented the band from making another fine album, brewing with imagination and creativity. The first track “Where It All Began” demonstrates the duo’s textural approach as sweeping waves of sound wash over your senses and deft cymbal taps and eerie trumpet makes for a disparate and beguiling sound palette. Durant’s guitar solo has such emotional impact and Edwin’s fluid bass lines are so nuanced and subtle, but no less effective. The evolving and twisting guitar soling in “Month of Moonlight” and the slowly brooding ambience and solemn piano melodies in the album ending and aptly titled “Expanse” are more treats for the ears.

Mutual Isolation is another finely crafted work of art from two musicians who clearly have a similar vision. Highly recommended.
