Haiku Funeral: Drown Their Moons In Blood

Haiku Funeral are a Bulgarian/American duo who with the release of Drown Their Moons In Blood are now six albums deep into their unique musical adventure. A journey that spans over a decade since the groups inception in a smoky studio in France back in 2008. Haiku Funeral consists of Dimitar Dimitrov (electronics, vocals) and William Kopecky (bass, vocals). From Bulgaria, Dimitar is a veteran of the black metal and dark ambient scenes, having played in bands such as Corpus Diavolis, Antelogos, Glades of Gloom (BG), and Unhealthy Dreams. American bassist William haunts progressive rock and experimental circles (Kopecky, Yeti Rain, Far Corner, Telescope Road).

On Drown Their Moons In Blood they have continued in the tradition laid down by their previous albums to create an album of surreal atmospheres of darkness and terror. Subversion and oppression permeates the whole album which is built on long extended meditations into a bleak, industrial hellscape. The Music sounds more like the film score to some 80’s film-noir or twisted sci-fi horror. I can envision scenes from Blade Runner being set to much of this music. But also some satanic torture ritual scene. The whole thing is somehow both meditative and unsettling which is definitely unique. It’s almost pointless to discuss the individual tracks because they are all basically just parts of one whole and don’t really depart from that overall soundscape.

Drown Their Moons In Blood is certainly not an album made for me though and is probably only gonna please lovers of the very niche world of industrial/darkwave/ambient/horror/soundscapes. While I can respect the work they obviously have put into this music, I find it an extremely challenging listen. If this was a soundtrack then I would be interested to watch the movie but as an album I can’t imagine ever choosing to listen to this. A well executed, but far too niche album for my taste.
