Reaping Asmodeia: Darkened Infinity

So, feeling reinvigorated and revitalized, Minneapolis, Minnesota three-piece Reaping Asmodeia have returned with their third full length album, Darkened Infinity. After touring with the likes of Rivers of Nihil, Slaughter To Prevail and The Faceless, the band felt it was time to level up again and deliver another musical installation replete with aggression, technicality and songwriting complexity.

After the brief melodic metal intro track the true nature of the unrelenting sonic attack is made evident from the beginning of “Epoch Of Choler” and doesn’t ease up until the last moments of “The Consequence Of Being”. The rhythmic technicality is a highlight throughout and at times those grooves almost remind me of something like Soreption. There are plenty of epic moments though as well like the prelude instrumental “Terpsichorean Flume” into the opening to “Dreamcaster” or “Lamentations” into the killer “Simulacra” which if they don’t get you excited I don’t know what would. The bass work in “Simulacra” is also worth noting, very cool stuff. The lead playing is very good however perhaps a bit too buried in the mix for my taste. The vocal growls are delivered with plenty of dirty nastiness that fits perfectly with the aggression of the instrumentation. Lyrically the band is exploring “humanity’s ongoing struggle with the psychological self” as they put it. To quote the guys “Darkened Infinity’s concept begins steeped in tragedy as the album’s protagonist loses his family at the hands of humanity’s destructive force, with his own life hanging in the balance. As the tale unfolds, Lane’s lyrics thread together a story of immortality, malevolent entities and realms of dream logic - all the while exploring humankind’s inherent duality.” The only part I wasn't crazy about was the almost emo-angst vocals on “Aberration” as the song title suggests it is an aberration on this otherwise very consistent album.

Reaping Asmodeia have managed to walk that fine line between technicality and real songwriting that connects on a human level. Many in this genre fall flat on the second part of that equation but in this case Darkened Infinity has succeeded to deliver music that is both extremely technical while also filled with genuine aggression and passion all mixed with an epicness that only adds to the overall flavor. Not for the faint of heart and if the extreme end of metal is not for you then give it a miss. However fans of Technical and Progressive Death Metal will find a lot to love about this album and for fans of those genres I would definitely recommend getting hold of Darkened Infinity.
