Farpoint: From Dreaming To Dreaming

Farpoint has released their third CD, with last Novembers From Dreaming To Dreaming. This is melodic progressive rock in the art-folk vein. Imagine Iona on steroids. Songs "Universal Light" and "Crying In The Rain" have great jazz-fusion bass (Frank Tyson) lines running through the driving upbeat playing by the band, very reminiscent of Sweetbottom or Nice Beaver. Others like "Autumn Sky" and "O Lost" have the roots rock mysticism that haunts you.

Farpoint hail from South Carolina, but have a more European sound. From Dreaming To Dreaming is filled with many styles from rock to folk to a touch of metal, but the music never gets too hard. This is very accessible music. Even the 10+ minute epic "Sojurn" is easy to get into, and although it transitions and builds to an amazing peak, you are surprised that so much time has lapsed. I have listened to this CD driving around town all week and the trip is just suddenly over, I am so engrossed in the tunes.

Farpoint's songwriting is not verbose, the musicianship doesn't blow you away, although I enjoy Rick Walker's drumming. The vocals are warm and soothing and also fit each song nicely. This is not a technical CD, but like Fritz Doddy's new CD, just plain fun to listen to. From Dreaming To Dreaming is highly recommended for fans of Nice Beaver and Mostly Autumn, as well as anyone who enjoys melody contained within an awesome rhythm section.
