Troops of Doom, The: The Absence of Light

Here’s another powerful EP from The Troops of Doom, one of Jairo “Tormentor” Guedz’s new band. The guitarist is definitely best known for his work with Sepultura in the mid-to-late 1980s, but he has pursued lots of other projects, including The Southern Blacklist, a Metallica tribute band called Metallica Cover Brazil, and this band. He also designs figurines and teaches other people how to paint miniatures.

This EP draws inspiration from Thomas Hobbes’s famous book Leviathan, which is interesting to note, but there’s hardly time to develop a deep concept on this release. The two main songs only take up about ten minutes or so and are memorable because they are such satisfying thrashers. The concept can be developed later.

Many listeners will compare The Troops of Doom to old school Sepultura and they should. This band is just as raw and fast and powerful as Sepultura and “Tormentor’s” guitars are as brilliant and impressive as they’ve always been. The two key songs here, “The Devil’s Tail” and “The Monarch” are high-energy thrashers that shift and groove in just the right ways. “The Monarch” also includes guest vocals from Jeff Becerra whose voice helped give Possessed some of their power. Both tracks will quickly please fans of this style and will leave them wanting more. Fortunately, The Troops of Doom is supposed to release a full-length album later this year (2022). Bonus tracks include a solid cover of Sepultura’s “Antichrist” that sounds just as raw as the original and demo versions of the two main tracks on the EP. Enjoy.
