Flying Norwegians: Wounded Bird

Listening to Flying Norwegians first album was a real eye opener. Who would have thought a country rock band would emerge from Oslo, Norway, and a very good one at that. Their 1974 debut titled New Day is an excellent disc and like the first album, Apollon Records has seen fit to release the remaster, this time it’s their sophomore effort Wounded Bird, originally released in 1976.

Flying Norwegians second album is another winner. The band effortlessly combines rock, folk and country, making some of the most irresistible songs you will hear. The disc begins with the super catchy soft rock of “Crazy Eyes Go Blind”. Please don’t be alarmed when you see the word ‘soft’ as there is more here than you might think, like excellent guitar and an outstanding synth solo. Another highlight is the vocals, both lead and harmony. They are so easy to listen to and fantastic throughout the disc. Next is “Turn The Page”, another melodic gem, sort of a combination of America and acoustic Neil Young. The harmonica and guitar, both acoustic and electric, attest to the band’s fine musicianship. The feel good country rock of “Taste Of Money” and the folk/country inspired “Let’s Walk To The River”, led with outstanding banjo picking, are a couple more winners. “Evening Prayer” is a lovely ballad, and another finely crafted, highly melodic tune.

This is another great album, and believe me, country music isn’t my first choice when I listen to music. But man if this isn’t some tasty playing and the melodies are just so easy on the ears. I’m glad Apollon Records has dug this one out of the vaults for all of us to enjoy. Recommended.
