Misery Men, The: Devillusion

Here is another rocking album I have been listening to lately. This time it’s Portland, Oregon’s The Misery Men and their third album titled Devillusion. This is all about the riff, usually dealt out in slow and heavy doses along with a powerful bottom end and raspy beer soaked lead vocals with just a touch of evil intent. The vocals are really good, reminding a little of early Blue Oyster Cult.

Slow to mid paced tempos dominate the album as the band has perfected the art of the slow burning riff. Stoner, doom, heavy rock, whatever you want to call it, this album works as the songs are memorable, thanks mostly to the riffs and vocals. The lead-off track “Devil’s Balls” is a bluesy hard rock affair filled with searing lead guitar and hard driving riffs. The heavy fuzz of “Werewolf”, another slow burn of a rocker and the powerful “Iron Front” is enough to make your blood boil as the riffs are that good. The band adds a few covers as well, like “Cat With 9 Lives”, a Sabbath inspired piece, and the fiery, heavy doom rocker “The Reaper”, both excellent tracks.

Devillusion is both powerful and catchy, a real riff fest that settles in quick and doesn’t let go. Fans of heavy music should get good mileage out of this one. Recommended.
